Overview One of the most impactful things you can do when getting started with Acme Corp is to set up your channels thoughtfully. A well-organized workspace drives adoption, reduces confusion, and makes information easy to find as your team grows.
What is a Channel? Channels are the core building blocks of Acme Corp. They are dedicated spaces where teams can communicate around a specific topic, project, department, or client. Every message sent in a channel is searchable and accessible to any member of that channel.
Public vs. Private Channels
- Public channels are open to everyone in your workspace. We recommend using public channels as the default — they promote transparency and make it easier for new team members to get up to speed.
- Private channels are invite-only and should be reserved for sensitive conversations, such as HR matters, executive discussions, or confidential client work.
Recommended Channel Naming Conventions Consistent naming makes your workspace easier to navigate. Here are a few best practices we recommend:
- Use prefixes to group related channels — for example, proj- for project channels, team- for department channels, and client- for client-facing work.
- Keep names lowercase and use hyphens instead of spaces (e.g., proj-website-redesign).
- Avoid vague names like "general chat" — specificity helps people know exactly where to go.
Getting Started Checklist
- Create a #general channel for company-wide announcements
- Create a #help-and-questions channel for internal support
- Set up at least one channel per active team or department
- Archive old or inactive channels to keep your workspace clean
